Clyde goal drought over but winless run carries on

- Staff reporter

Clyde ..................... 1 Elgin ...................... 2

Clyde striker David Goodwillie ended the club’s 520 minute wait since their last goal but ultimately failed to stop their dismal run without a league win.

Although the 28 year old missed a penalty, he levelled the scores in the second half away to Elgin City.

However, it was Chris Dodd who came off the bench to steal all three points with three minutes remaining.

The result ended Clyde’s four-game run of 0-0 draws but they are still without a win in League Two since September.

Bully Wee boss Danny Lennon said:“I actually thought we were looking the team more likely to go on and win it. To fuel our ambitions the way we want to go, one point was not enough so we wanted to go for the maximum.

“It’s disappointing to lose it because I felt a point was the least we deserved.”

Clyde saw some early action with Ally Love having a strike deflected just wide and from the corner he crossed for Smart Osadolor to send an unchallenged header wide.

Elgin scored with their first raid, a slick move involving five players ending with Brian Cameron looping a header home in off Jordan Allan on 18 minutes.

Six minutes later Cameron set up teammate Declan Byrne in the box for a strike which Blair Currie did well to push to safety.

Clyde had the chance to level from the penalty spot on 37 minutes when Osadolor was fouled but Goodwillie struck the inside of the post with his kick.

The Bully Wee were desperate to end their long goal drought and Love was inches away with a deflected free kick 10 minutes after the interval.

Three minutes later an Elgin break saw Scott Smith advance to play through Byrne, who fired over with only Currie to beat.

The home side almost made it 2-0 when Allan’s cross was headed against his own post by Clyde full-back Callum Home.

Midway through the half Clyde finally broke a scoring drought lasting back to mid November.

And it was Goodwillie who atoned for his spot kick miss by drilling a low drive home from the edge of the box after a corner kick fell in his path.

However, Elgin nicked victory late on when an Ali Sutherland corner fell for Dodd to slot the ball in from 15 yards.
