Glens pull off a shock

- Murray Spooner

Willie Harvey reckons Glencairn were not at their best as they beat Petershill in an afternoon coupon-buster.

The bookies were not giving The Glens much of a chance prior to kick-off, with league sponsors McBookie.com offering more than triple your money for an away win.

That was understandable given Peasy’s form of nine wins and a draw from their 10 league games so far – and they also had home advantage.

But boss Harvey would have been more than happy to be the underdogs in this one and the win moves the Rutherglen outfit up three places to mid-table as they bid for promotion.

Harvey said:“We weren’t at our best but effort-wise it was absolutely tremendous.

“We did start to tire towards the end but we had only one training session over the festive period, on the Wednesday before the Saturday, so we had not done a great deal.

“That’s unusual for us because we are quite a fit team and that’s what can get us over the line. But the boys worked their socks off .

“You expect the home team to come at you and Jack Baker has pulled off a terrific save early on. After that we started to get a foothold in the game.

“Jay McKay and Gary Smith were causing all sorts of problems but both midfields were cancelling each other out a bit.

“It was two great goals from Smith and Jordan Leyden hit the post so we could have been 3-0 up at half-time.

“We told the players that in the first 10 minutes we knew they would come out and try to get back into it but we actually got the third goal with a good finish from Stewart Hall.

“Jordan Murch is a clever player and got a hold of Hall and pulled him towards him before going down and they score the penalty to geat back into it.

“Once we changed to a 4-5-1 we didn’t look under any threat.”
