CAMBUS START NEW YEAR WITH DEFEAT

Cambus fall to heavy defeat despite good first half

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rugby Club endured a miserable start to 2018 when they were hammered by promotion hopefuls Carrick.

The two teams were tied level at Coats Park going into half-time thanks to a try and penalty from Louis Senter and Indio Harland’s conversion.

But all Cambus’ hard work in the first half was undone at the start of the second as the home side scored two tries in quick succession before cruising to a 73-10 victory.

Cambus captian Alec Bean said: “It was a close game and we probably had the upper hand in the first half.

“It was 10-10 at half-time but they scored two quick tries at the start of the second half and it all started to fall apart.

“We stopped doing much of what we had done in the first 40 minutes and let the game get away from us. We stopped tackling and they were able to capitalise on that.

“Carrick are a good side but we ran them close at home in the previous match against them.

“We need to focus on what we did well in the first half and take that into the next game against Helensburgh.”

Cambus will be out to avenge their defeat to Helensburgh earlier in the season by claiming an important win against them on Saturday.

Bean was not part of the side who lost 30-27 to the team currently propping up the table in controversial fashion last September.

He was out injured when the referee awarded Helensburgh a last-minute penalty which they decided to kick into touch. But the ref baffled many in the crowd and the players by letting the home side take it again.

They then decided to kick the ball over the posts, claiming the victory with the last action of the game.

And Bean insists he would love to get maximum points off the BT West Division League 1’s bottom club to carry Cambuslang away from the relegation zone.

He said: “They beat us in the reverse fixture when we really should have won.

“They’re down the bottom of the table now so it’s an important game for both teams.

“We’ve got our own aims this season[a mid-table finish] so we’ll be out to avenge that last result against them.

“We’ll do all we can to get five points. They may be bottom but you can not take them lightly, it will be far from an easy game.”
