Flight path plans draw a cautious reaction

Locals think they’d get used to noise

- Jonathan Geddes

Rutherglen could soon have aeroplanes heading over it on a more regular basis.

Proposals by Glasgow Airport to change the flight routes of planes include plans to have more travelling over Rutherglen’s airspace.

The move has already prompted fears that noise levels could dramatically increase in the area, so we went to Rutherglen Main Street to ask locals their thoughts.

Alan Ure said: “I don’t think it would make much difference, to be honest. You already have a lot of noise from the transport here on the roads.”

John Connor said: “You’d get used to it, the way that you get used to hearing the clock go there (at the town hall). The only thing I’d be worried about is them dropping out the sky.”

Gordon Evans said: “I think it would depend on a lot of things, like the height they were flying at. Obviously no-one particularly wants to be in the way of a flight path, but we’d be a wee bit away from the airport, so they might be at a decent height.

“Sometimes you get planes flying over anyway and it’s not really noticeable. So I’ll reserve judgement until we know more.”

Christine Farquharson said: “I remember we used to get planes over Rutherglen quite regularly, going back to the 1970s. I’d listen to them at night going over the area.

“I suppose the ratio of planes might cause a problem but I don’t really have a problem with it.”
