Cash grant boost for indoor bowling club

- Murray Spooner

A Fernhill gents bowling group is opening its doors to new members who can enjoy new equipment thanks to a grant worth over £9,000.

The club was approached by the Corra Foundation who brokered a connection with staff at VASLan, a third sector support service, to lend help in applying for Big Lottery funding.

After finding out the application was successful, the group based at Fernhill Community Centre since 1975, has been able to replace its donated equipment with brand new carpets and bowls.

Members will now host open days on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout February to give new members a taste of the sport.

Morton Anderson, 74, a retired milkman, has been running the group for more than 15 years. He said:“We play carpet bowls but it’s also like a social club where you can come and have a chat, a cup of tea and play cards.

“Some of the men have no wives and were sitting in the house so it gets them out for a bit of a laugh, and you need that at our age.

“Cath McNally (Corra Foundation community co-ordinator) started the application and now we have over £9,000 for new equipment like carpets and bowls. We’ve also got two handicap groups who use it nearly every day.

“It’s not just for people in Fernhill. We have members from all over, in Cambuslang, Spittal and Rutherglen.”

Any interested individuals should go along to 12 Auchenlarie Drive, Rutherglen, on a Tuesday or Friday between 1pm and 3pm.
