A Cambuslang actress will be trying to avoid the chop in her latest show.
Rachel Thomson has the lead female role of Johanna in the Glasgow Music Theatre’s production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
The show, a mixture of songs, gore and black humour, focuses on a murderous barber killing his customers and making them into meat pies.
Rachel, a former head girl at Cathkin High, has worked with the theatre for over seven years, juggling it with her day job as a doctor in Ayr.
Her character Johanna is in love with another character, Anthony, and becomes embroiled in the barber’s murderous spree.
She said: “I’m really looking forward to it because it’s a classic and one I’ve always wanted to do.
“Stephen Sondheim (who composed the show) writes very challenging music so I’m looking forward to trying that.
“Sondheim’s not interested in dancy and happy musicals, so it’s a fantastic story and very darkly funny throughout.
“There are some numbers that are hilarious and really comical death scenes, so it’s all very different from the shows we’ve done before.”
Rachel is still enjoying being involved in the group.
She said: “I love it because it’s a nice respite from a serious job.
“The day job is very straight-laced, so here you can be a bit creative and it gives you a life outside work.
“When I think back to my first shows, there’s a massive difference in my confidence.
“I’ve been involved behind the scenes too, directing and producing in the past and a lot of those things can translate over to the day job too.”
The show will be performed at Eastwood Park Theatre, Giffnock, from tonight, Wednesday, January 24, through until Saturday, January 27.
