Comic book man Vin turns skills to hotel

Vin’s new challenge

- Jonathan Geddes

A Rutherglen comic book artist has turned to a different challenge - after designing the wallpaper in a new Glasgow hotel.

Vincent Deighan, who goes under the pen name Frank Quitely and lives in Cathkin, has drawn the likes of Batman, Superman and the X-Men.

Now his work will grace the walls of the Raddison Red Hotel, a new 174 room site at Finneston Quay.

The artist was keen to get involved in the project, as it let him try something different.

He said: “I think most people’s perception of hotels is they buy in the worst kind of art they can find from some hotel art factory.

“Here there’s a general party atmosphere with a little bit of humour.”

Donald Stewart, managing director of Forrest Developments and director of Forrest Hotels, said that art was a big part of the hotel’s brand. He said: “Art is very much part of the DNA of the hotel brand.

“So, having some bespoke art that reflects Glasgow’s culture, and finding the right artist to communicate that to people, was very important to us.”

Last year Vin, a former St Columbkille’s pupil, saw his work exhibited at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

He commented then on the fact he had loved art as a child, with his first work going on display in Rutherglen when he was just a child.

He said: “I had always drawn, as long as I could remember, but then I realised I was the best in the class.

“I remember that my work was first exhibited at Rutherglen Library for a school thing, and it was a painting of a knight in armour.

“The teacher gave me a tin of silver enamel to finish it, and I remember absolutely loving that.”

The hotel will officially open in April this year.
