Summer football needed

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rangers boss Paul McColl reckons it is time for summer football to be rolled out across the juniors.

Only five non league fixtures survived the winter snow storm last week with Lang’s match at home to Shettleston not one of them.

Weather permitting, Somervell Park ground staff will get to work on the sodden turf for the rearranged clash this weekend.

But McColl reckons it is time to start the fixtures earlier in the year and introduce a longer winter break.

“This weather does not do anyone any good, ”he said. “The clubs are losing out on money and some are paying real hard wages to players so this weather is no use.

“The fans are standing out in blizzards and even if the games do go ahead on an Astroturf park, these games can be hard to play in and can’t be good to watch.

“There needs to be a longer break in the winter and I think at some point they need to bring in summer football.”

Should the game go ahead, ex Lang player Paul Hewitt is a contender to start against his former club.

Hewitt was signed by McColl from Johnstone Burgh in the summer before leaving for the The Town months later.

The Wee Gers boss knows he poses a threat and added: ”Paul has scored a few recently. He’s a big guy, 6ft 3in, so it won’t be easy but there are no easy games in this league. They won their last game and they’ve picked up a bit since the start of the season.”

In club transfer news, John Henderson was sold to Fauldhouse United while Graham Ramage was placed on the transfer list.
