Precaution as steak off menus
Two pubs in Rutherglen and Cambuslang were forced to pull steak from their menu over hygiene issues during their popular steak club night.
Three items were not available to customers at both the An Ruadh-Ghleann and The John Fairweather main street venues after a health scare at meat suppliers Russell Hume Ltd.
The Derby-based supplier to the pubs and other firms had been investigated by food safety inspectors over noncompliance with hygiene regulations.
However, Wetherspoon has since cancelled its contract with Russell Hume and is now sourcing its steaks from various new suppliers in the UK and Ireland. Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin explained:“Firstly we wish to apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused to them.
“However, our decision to stop serving steak from Tuesday, January 23, despite limited information from the supplier, was the correct one. Steak is one of the most popular dishes, and we serve around 200,000 per week on average, about half of these on our extremely popular Tuesday Night Steak Club.
“We have now sourced alternative suppliers and our pub staff are once again looking forward to serving the steak dishes from Tuesday, January 30, onwards. “
On Wednesday, January 24, the FSA reported that they were thoroughly investigating Russell Hume Ltd, but also stressed that there was no indication that people had become ill from eating meat supplied by them.
