Caroline runs for late dad

Third 5k race in his honour

- Murray Spooner

A Rutherglen woman is taking part in her third 5K run in memory of her late father.

Caroline Porter, 35, will once again make her way to the starting line of the Glasgow Resolution Run to raise money for the Stroke Association on March 11, 2018.

Her dad, William Porter, passed away three years ago following a major stroke at the age of 72.

And Caroline, a mum of one, has decided ever since to help raise awareness and funds for a cause close to her heart.

She believes both preventing stroke and life after stroke support is important and gives hope to people affected by it in Scotland.

The Rosslyn Avenue resident said: “This is the third Resolution Run in Glasgow and my third since my dad had a stroke.

“I suppose I wanted to do something because I kept thinking about what dad would have been like if he had come home after his stroke.

“He had always been a very active person and I couldn’t imagine him any other way.

“It made me think about stroke survivors who are left with disabilities and have to adjust to a new way of life.”

Caroline, a principle teacher at Lairdsland Primary School in Kirkintilloch, will be the first to admit she is not a regular runner.

But her training will stand her in good stead come the event which is to be held at Glasgow Green.

She has already raised an impressive £1,600 for the charity and welcomes any donations from Reformer readers.

“I am looking forward to this one but the first time I did it was awful,” Caroline laughed.

“You can run either the 10K or the 5K but I’ll be running the 5K because I don’t run normally. I think the 10k is a bit of a trek for me.

“I started training in the Christmas holidays and have ran the route a few times in Glasgow Green so I’m looking forward to it.”

Angie Macleod, communications manager at the Stroke Association in Scotland, said: “I am glad that Caroline is taking on this challenge after being affected by stroke.

“It is great to see her determination to raise awareness of stroke, which is vital in our work.

“She is also a fine example of someone committed to being fit for the run, which is in keeping with our stroke prevention messages. I wish Caroline all the best for the Stroke Association’s Resolution Run.”
