Too few take up flu jab

60% shun warning

- Douglas Dickie

Concerns have been raised after it emerged people in Rutherglen and Cambuslang with underlying health problems have been shunning the flu vaccination.

Nearly 60 per cent of eligible patients in the NHS Lanarkshire area have yet to get their jag.

This winter has been one of the worst for flu across Lanarkshire, with a four-fold increase in people suffering from flu, leaving health services stretched to their limit.

It even forced some GP practices to open on Saturdays throughout January.

NHS Lanarkshire bosses are now urging residents suffering from underlying health problems to make sure they are immunised.

Dr David Cromie, NHS Lanarkshire consultant in public health medicine, said: “People with health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma and bronchitis which can make them more vulnerable to flu, people aged 65 years or over women who are pregnant are being urged to get the free flu vaccine as soon as possible if they have not already done so this season. The vaccine offers the best defence against the most common types of flu circulating at the moment.

“Contact your GP surgery today to make an appointment.”

Last week, Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey called on residents to help NHS workers by getting immunised.

She said: “NHS staff in Rutherglen are doing a tremendous job at a tough time of year, and we should all do our bit to not add unnecessary pressure on the health service.”
