Rotarians give a £3,000 boost to good causes

- Edel Kenealy

Rutherglen Rotary Club had a very generous end to 2017, dishing out £3,000 to good causes.

Members of the club handed over cheques after learning about various charities operating in the Rutherglen area from guest speakers.

In October, Rotarians welcomed Cambuslang woman Fiona Brown, who is a development manager for Pancreatic Cancer Scotland.

Fiona lost her own mother to the disease and spoke from personal experience about the impact it had.

She accepted a cheque for £1,000 at the end of her talk, stating the cash injection would fund education campaigns, research into the cancer and work to improve healthcare standards in Scotland.

A second cheque for £1,000 was presented to Fernhill Soccer School in November, ensuring the survival of the club for at least two years.

The school, which brings together children from the Fernhill and Castlemilk areas to play football, was at risk of closure when its previous funder was unable to continue.

It was however saved when the Rotary contributed to the club’s efforts to raise the money needed to pay for pitch hire and expenses.

Finally, in December, the rotary club was further able to help local causes when its annual Christmas collection at Tesco Burnside raised £600.

The club continued its goodwill this month as it showed its support for the National Autistic Society.

The organisation, which provides lifeline support for people with autism and their families, was awarded £1,000 by the group.

Karron Kent from the society accepted the cheque after giving members an insight into the challenges faced by those on the autism spectrum.

The funds will go towards the work of the society which includes support groups in Rutherglen and the surrounding areas.
