On fire Vale go 15 points clear at top

- Amateur round up with Ian Kendall

Newton Vale continued their dominance at the top of the table with a resounding 3-1 victory over title rivals Erskine.

The Cambuslang side took an early lead on a difficult playing surface as Kieran Zeb whipped in a wonderful corner which was met by the head of Kevin McFarlane.

Only moments later they had another corner and again were able to take advantage. This time a Craig Fellows corner was met by Mark McFadden who finished superbly with a left -foot half volley.

The park was really cutting up and it was a struggle to play any sort of football, with both sides struggling to create any chances.

Erskine then got back into the game with a well finished strike by their centre forward who was given too much time inside the box.

Newton should have been out of sight by half-time if it were not for a couple of great saves from the Erskine keeper to deny Martin Jones and Craig Fellows.

Into the second half and both sides were putting in plenty of tackles but Vale managed to extend their lead. Fellows was fouled just inside the Erskine half before McFarlane played a wonderful pass through from a quick free kick for Zeb to run onto and he showed great composure as he slotted it past the goalkeeper.

Erskine were unable to carve out any real threats and the only time they really troubled McKegney in goal was from a free kick.

Darren Hampson was then introduced for Martin Jones who had put in a shift up top but only lasted 10 minutes when he and the Erskine centre half were sent off for an altercation. The referee also sent off the Erskine right back. Meanwhile in the Sunday Central AFL’s West of Scotland Cup, third round, Cambuslang Football Academy lost 1-0 to Condorrat Weavers, while Castlemilk United advanced with a 3-1 win over Saltcoats. In the Premier 1, Castlemilk Dynamo thumped Overlee Partizans 5 - 0 to go six points clear and Rutherglen Rovers were hammered 6-1 by Glasgow Rovers in the Premier 2.
