New group can improve health

- Murray Spooner

Residents of Rutherglen and Cambuslang are encouraged to get up and go as a new walking group has started in the area.

Ability Walking is a structured 60 minute brisk walk for around two miles which will take place every Thursday at 7pm.

Regular brisk walking can help maintain a healthy weight and prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and Type 2 Diabetes.

Rosie McBride, 38, from Rutherglen is a qualified walk leader in safe and friendly outdoor environments and will lead the proceedings starting tomorrow in the town.

She said: “My goal is to get Rutherglen moving and create an active community.

“People can’t always access a gym, may not feel confident of going or not have the money to do these types of things.

“I felt this is something I could bring to the community.

“It is a 60-minute walk but there will be off points for people who cannot go the distance just yet.

“It will strengthen your bones and muscles and helps prevent or manage conditions such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and Type 2 Diabetes.

“There is also a social side to it and helps people get out and meet new people.”

The walk is free and open to everyone but under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.

To book email: abilityfitnessrutherglen@gmail. com or message the Facebook page, abilityfitnessrutherglen.

The group will meet at the Aspire building at the top of Farmeloan Road, on Rutherglen Main Street tomorrow.

Walkers are asked to dress for the weather and wear appropriate walking shoes.
