Cambus win with last play

Jones tips match in Cambuslang’s favour

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rugby Club head coach Jamie Seery believes the points claimed from their last-gasp victory over Greenock Wanderers could be crucial come the end of the season.

The Cambus came roaring back after trailing their visitors for most of the match in Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off.

And as the clock ticked down, Gregor Jones sparked jubilant scenes among the home support and players as he scored a try in the last play of the match to bag his side a 20-16 victory.

The result moves Seery’s men five points clear of nearest challengers Oban Lorne, who failed to field a team in their last arranged league match with Garnock.

Seery said:“That gives us a bit of breathing space and the more points we pick up the better. Results like Saturday could be crucial when you look back on the season.”

Gregor Jones was the hero as Cambuslang RFC took a huge step towards securing league safety.

The inside centre scored the try in the last play against Greenock Wanderers to keep his side eight points clear of the BT West Division League 1’s bottom two.

A try from Chad McGlame hauled Cambuslang back into the game after going down 10-0 early on in the first half.

Louis Senter scored his side’s second try either side of two converted Greenock penalties.

And he scored once again as the clock ticked down, with Greenock still leading the match 16-15.

But it was Jones who finished off a fine piece of play in the closing moments to win the game 20-16.

The ball was switched from left of the field to the right before the former Cambus skipper was crushed by a Greenock player as he put it down, beyond the try line, at the bottom corner of the pitch.

Delighted head coach Jamie Seery said: “It was an excellent result and it was important because it gives us some breathing space from the teams at the bottom. “They were ahead for most of the game. “They were five points ahead at half-time so for the boys to come back and win with the last play is obviously great.

“The players were ecstatic after coming back from that.

“It was just the small errors in the first half which let us down and let them into the game.

“They scored with a lot of kicks to goal from our mistakes.

“But it was a better performance than the last game and was an important win for us.”

It also stretched the gap between Cambus and their next opponents Oban Lorne, who failed to field a team in their last arranged match with Garnock, to five points. And having suffered a similar situation earlier in the season, Seery expects the Argyll and Bute outfit to face a three point deduction.

Ahead of his side’s 200 mile-round trip for the 3pm kick off, the coach added: “We are still in the same position but five points ahead of Oban.

“Just like us, they should be deducted three points because they didn’t field a team.

“Which means that we could be eight away from them when we play them on Saturday.

“They are a strong side though and when we played them last time I think that was their strongest team and we beat them.”

It was an excellent result and an important one
