Row over rail tickets

- Jonathan Geddes

ScotRail has blamed the weather after angry commuters could not purchase weekly or monthly tickets during the morning rush on Monday.

The ticket office at Rutherglen train station was closed while staff tried to deal with the snow that had fallen overnight.

Passengers seeking to purchase weekly or monthly passes were then told at Central Station in Glasgow that wasn’t an option and they would have to buy a daily return ticket instead.

Irate Twitter user Kirsty Brown posted on the social media site:“Ticket offices closed at Hamilton West and Rutherglen this morning yet staff at Glasgow Central won’t sell customers weekly tickets. Why should we be penalised and pay for a return because you don’t have staff? Shocking!”

Another Rutherglen resident contacted the Reformer to say that it was impossible to buy a monthly ticket.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: “Following the overnight snow, our station teams were out working hard to clear platforms and access roads across the network.

“Unfortunately this meant that some customers may not have been able to buy their ticket from the ticket office.

“The majority of our stations, such as Rutherglen, have self-service ticket machines which offer a variety of fares – including weekly season tickets.”

Scotrail policy is that single and return tickets can be refunded against the cost of the next season ticket, when the ticket office is closed. However, these instances are looked at on a“case by case basis”.
