Labour put forward budget priorities
South Lanarkshire Council’s Labour Group have set out their budget priorities.
They are calling for spending on roads, action to protect frontline jobs and employment in South Lanarkshire and the scrapping of social work cuts. Demands include: Scrapping £3 million of cuts to the carriageway resurfacing programme and boosting roads investment overall.

Stopping the re-provisioning of adult and older people day care.
“It goes without saying that Labour will not support a budget that includes compulsory redundancies,” said the group’s deputy leaderWalter Brogan
“We also want to see much of the good work started by the previous Labour administration continue, like the council housebuilding programme, increased investment in social care and one of the best Living Wage rates in the country for our council workers. “South Lanarkshire Labour have considered the council’s latest savings proposals in detail and we have decided to put forward a better, fairer alternative.
“Our proposals would save under-threat social work services, do more to protect frontline jobs and keep £3m in the roads resurfacing programme, over and above any new capital spend on roads.”
Cllr Brogan added: “Labour councillors have listened to the people’s priorities and we will do everything in our power to ensure these are reflected in the council’s budget for the coming year.
“South Lanarkshire Labour are also proposing to protect council employability schemes, save jobs and stop cuts to flood prevention works.”
