Terrified OAP robbed of phone and cash cards

Pensioner’s home raided in the early hours

- Murray Spooner

A despicable thug who broke into a vulnerable pensioner’s home and threatened and robbed him also stole the landline phone to stop the terrified 83-year-old calling for help.

The elderly King’s Park resident endured a terrifying ordeal after the heartless intruder forced his way into the Menock Road property at 4am last Tuesday.

Police said the man threatened the pensioner with a sharp object and demanded that he hand over his bank cards and pin numbers.

The thief then fled with the cards, alcohol and the phone, leaving his elderly victim traumatised.

It was several hours before a neighbour found out and called police, who subsequently discovered hundreds of pounds had been stolen from the pensioner’s account.

The culprit is described as white, Scottish, around 6ft to 6ft 3in tall, aged 30 to 40, heavily built, with dark hair and wearing dark clothing.

Labour councillor Malcolm Cunning, of the Linn Ward, condemned the robbery and said it was “unusual” for this sort of incident to occur in the area.

He told the Reformer: “This is very concerning for the poor 83-year-old gentleman and I hope he recovers from this trauma as quickly as possible.

“Apparently the police are looking at CCTV to find out where the money was taken from using the cards.

“I hope that the police are successfully speedy in apprehending the thief.

“It is not what we would expect to happen on Menock Road or anywhere in Glasgow, certainly not this level of crime.”

Detective Sergeant Graham McCreadie, of the Greater Glasgow community investigation unit, said extra officers were now patrolling the area.

He added: “This was a terrifying ordeal for anyone to endure, never mind an elderly man in his own home in the middle of the night.

“Thankfully he was uninjured but it is vital that we catch the despicable individual responsible and prevent him from striking again.

“Enquiries have revealed that several hundred pounds have been taken from the man’s account and we are currently checking CCTV, and speaking to local residents in an attempt to trace the person responsible.

“Anyone who has any information that can assist our enquiries is asked to contact police at the incident room at Cathcart police office via telephone number 0141 532 4977 or email greaterglasgowciu@ scotland.pnn.police.uk quoting incident number 0472 of February 20.

“Alternatively, calls can be made anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
