It’s a happy new year ... Chinese style

St Cadoc’s Primary School mark the Year of the Dog

A Cambuslang primary school had a doggone hit recently.

St Cadoc’s celebrated the Chinese New Year with a special assembly, marking the Year of the Dog.

There was singing and dancing, while youngsters had designed Chinese lanterns for the occasion.

The day featured all three languages that are taught at St Cadoc’s - English, Spanish and Mandarin.

The school teaches Mandarin from primary one, while a new Confucius classroom was officially opened last year.

Principal teacher Patricia Elliot said: “We were wanting to celebrate all the languages taught in the school, so the primary ones sang Spanish songs, then rooms two and three sang Mandarin songs, then there were Scottish songs and finally rooms six and seven performed the Chinese Lantern dance.

“This was the second time they’d performed, as they also did it for the opening of the new classroom, and it was very colourful and entertaining.

“They had made the lanterns themselves too.

“I think they all love the cultural element to it, where they are getting to learn about another culture first hand.

“It’s part of the 1 + 2 approach to language learning, which is trying to help the children learn more languages to cope with the world, which is much more globalised now.”

The Chinese New Year always falls on the new moon between January 16 and February 20, which this year was Friday, February 16.
