Black Cats hope to bag a lucky break with BBC

- Andrew Bargh

Black cats may be associated with misfortune, but there’s nothing unlucky about stumbling upon the music of this psychadelic four-piece.

The ever-impressive Black Cat Revue, fronted by Coatbridge pair Garry Thomson and David McIlwraith, are set to continue on their musical journey as they prepare to perform at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut as part of a BBC introducing event next Thursday. Garry, who resides in Summerlee, started the band with David around three years ago and says they can’t wait for their second appearance on the iconic Tuts stage. He said: “In the last six months a lot of good stuff has been coming our way.

“We played King Tuts a few years ago but we’re so chuffed to have been asked back along with the BBC as part of such a great line-up.

“It’s a really good platform and being part of this really ups the stakes for us as a band.

“We want to be able to show people what we can do and turn some heads.

“We’ve been given this opportunity and we want to make the absolute most of it.”

After revealing some of their musical inspirations, ranging from The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan to Neil Young and Echo and the Bunnymen, Garry expanded on his and David’s hopes for the band.

He explained: “David and I share the songwriting duties as well as the frontman role in the band.

“It all started off with the two of us just jamming in his kitchen about four years ago then we started looking for a full band.

“It’s been going really well and although we’re not naive about expectations and reality we want to keep going and see what happens.

“We’re getting bigger every year and released a debut single over the summer.

“The next step is getting a full EP recorded in the studio.”

What Black Cat Revue may lack in studio releases, they’ve more than made up for in live experience.

Garry continued: “We supported The Fall in November at Glasgow’s QMU.

“We played on their last tour before their singer Mark Smith died and that is something we’ll never forget as we are huge fans of him and the band.

“We were going to join them on tour this spring but the change in circumstance means that won’t happen.

“Looking back, though, I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
