Rutherglen Reformer

Happy to be back in goal

- Murray Spooner

Veteran shotstopper Allan Colquhoun admitted he does not expect to be handed the number one jersey for Glencairn’s next game but enjoyed being back between the posts.

The 47-year-old came out of retirement to help The Glens to their first league clean sheet this season and also boost their promotion chances.

Colquhoun, who has now made 65 appearances for the Rutherglen outfit, replaced Jack Baker who called in sick the day before the game against Largs.

He said: “I came out of retirement for the umpteenth time to help Willie Harvey and The Glens and I was happy to be back between the sticks.

“It was a pretty even game and both teams had few chances.

“They played like a typical Ayrshire team who kick the ball long and feed off any scraps.

“The Glens were worthy of a point and it was great to keep a clean sheet, especially for a 47-year-old!”

Glencairn’s focus now turns to Central League Cup action on Saturday where they take on Central District First side St. Roch’s.

Colquhoun has been a visitor to James McGrory Park on a few occasions in front of a lively band of loyal Candy Rock supporters. And he told the Reformer he would be more than happy to get the nod once again if called upon.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen but I’m going to train with The Glens on Wednesday and we’ll take it from there, ”he said .“I am happy to help out as and when required because at 47 you don’t expect to play.

“A few of the coaching team were joking I should be knocking down the door if I don’t get a game next week .

But I’ll not be knocking any doors down at my age.

“I’ve played at St Roch’s many times – and I know it will be a hard game.”
