WE’LL WIN CUP TIE FOR GAFFER

Tribute to gunned-down boss McColl

Cambuslang Rangers midfielder Kris Gebbie says the players will have thoughts of manager Paul McColl firmly in their minds when they return to action this weekend.

The Lang’s scheduled league fixture with Kello Rovers was postponed last Saturday after their gaffer was seriously injured in a shooting less than a mile away from Somervell Park.

McColl was shot twice, in the head and the stomach, after he was ambushed at his car on the evening of February 21 in the town’s Borgie Crescent.

Players and coaching staff held a meeting at a training session on Saturday in preparation for their next match away to Newmains United in the Central League Cup. And Cambuslang local lad Gebbie, 24, insists they will be going all out for the win which would hopefully see their manager back in the dugout for a second-round clash with Junior giants Pollock.

“All the players will be thinking of Paul when we go out there,” said the former Stonelaw High School pupil. “We’ll just look to get the business done and get the wee man into the next round of the cup.

“We had a training session on Saturday so it was good to get everyone together to chat about things.

“Yeah, there was shock from the players but we will just look to get back to playing and focus on the football side of things.

“It was good that the Kello game was called off. It wouldn’t have been right.

“I don’t know too much about Newmains but we don’t take any game lightly and we’ll go out to try and get us into the next round.”

It wasn’t too long ago Gebbie was heading out of the exit door at Somervell after the club stripped him of the captaincy and placed him on the transfer list in January.

But after some good performances in his new position in the centre of midfield, the former full-back has fought his way into the management team’s plans again.

Gebbie added: “Paul is a great guy and has been great with me ever since I came to the club. We hope he’s back soon.”

Wee Gers assistants Billy Campbell, John McKeown and Jimmy Kerr are expected to take the team for Saturday’s cup clash at Victoria Park while Paul’s in hospital.
