Unbeaten run comes to end

Peterhead ............... 3 Clyde....................... 0

Clyde boss Danny Lennon admitted his side did not play to the standards they expect as their unbeaten run came to an end at league leaders Peterhead.

Russell McLean scored early and the big striker netted again from the penalty spot in the second half before Rory McAllister sealed the points late on.

Lennon, whose side went six games without defeat before last weekend’s loss, said:“I thought the hungrier team on the day thoroughly deserved their points. Peterhead are going very well and they are consistent and although they played their game today, we did not play ours.

“Peterhead looked sharper for first and second balls right through the game. When you start games, particularly against Peterhead up here and give them an opportunity to start the way they did, they are difficult to break down.

“We’ve got to take that on the chin and look forward to the remaining four games of the season and look for a response. We’ve now got this week to rest not just physically but mentally.”

Peterhead needed just four minutes to go in front through McLean’s close range finish. David McCracken saw a volley from Willie Gibson’s corner cleared off the line but McLean was on hand to sweep home the rebound.

Clyde had a couple of chances to draw level before the break but Peterhead regained the initiative in the second period and they doubled their lead when McLean converted a penalty in the 68th minute after Jamie Stevenson was bundled over by Jordan Stewart.

McLean passed up a great opportunity to complete his hat-trick in the 74th minute when he stroked an effort wide from just inside the box after collecting a pass from substitute Scott Brown.

But Peterhead talisman McAllister, who replaced McLean, put the seal on their victory in the 79th minute with a 14 yard shot, which deflected in off Mark Lamont.

The result was damaging for Clyde, who slipped outside the play-off zone having arrived at Balmoor in fourth spot.
