Camby pub is on the market for £250,000

Sweepers Club may be ‘good site for fast food outlet’

A pub which plays home to Cambuslang Rangers’ changing facilities and committee rooms has been put on the market for £250,000.

Sweepers Club on Somervell Street was formerly the team’s social club before it was taken over in the 1980s.

The current owner is understood to have an arrangement with the football club and owns the changing rooms and the committee rooms as well as the bar and function hall.

Its online listing, on real estate company RightMove’s website, describes it as “a great opportunity to buy an established business” and purchase a “part of Cambuslang history”.

Cambuslang Rangers chairman Billy Miller admitted the sale would affect the club and hoped to be notified of any potential transaction.

said: “I understand an agreement was reached with the owner in 1984 or 1985 for us to use the facilities and water as part of the deal.”

Controversial plans for a fastfood drive-thru in the nearby Morrisons car park on Bridge Street were scrapped last month.

However, according to the website’s listing, it may be “a good site for a fast food outlet such as KFC, Burger King or McDonalds” or a Brewers FayreHe type establishment.

Cambuslang Community Council chairman David Thomson said: “We are always keen to see new businesses and employment in Cambuslang.

“Our preference would be for these to be sited on the Main Street to strengthen the viability of the town centre and for them to bring new types of services to the town.

“However, with the new housing developments on the Hoover site and elsewhere, there could be demand for an attractive family-friendly restaurant.

“We will look at any plans that are submitted, but one important issue will be the traffic and parking issues on Somervell Street.”

The property is split into two parts. The function suite has a separate bar, toilets and a small stage. The larger bar has a sports theme, pool tables, a darts area and some fruit and gaming machines. There is also a large seated area within the bar.

It takes function bookings and is said to be ideal for birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries, christenings and communions.

The pub’s key features include meeting room and conference facilities, as well as boasting an “excellent” central location close to public transport and the M74
