Fiona aims to rustle up music prize

Chance of awards showcase

- Jonathan Geddes

A country and western songstress from Cambuslang is hoping to collar an award.

Fiona McKenna, who performs under the name Robyn Taylor, is on a longlist for the listeners’ choice award at the UK Country Music Awards for her tune ‘In The Arms of Love’.

The list will be cut to five later in the year, who will then perform live at the awards in September.

Westburn woman Fiona, 51, only released her first album in 2017 after years moonlighting as a cabaret singer when not at her day job at South Lanarkshire Council.

She said: “I am thrilled to be nominated and I see it as some recognition for all the hard work I’ve put in since releasing ‘The Way I Wanna Be.’

“It would be great to receive enough votes to make the final five to get the chance to perform in front of a packed house full of country music fans, fellow musicians, DJs and bookers in the industry and show them what a lassie from Westburn can really do.”

Fiona has had success since releasing her music last year, with track ‘Stop My Heart’ going into the Hotdisc charts at No. 4.

She said: “The Hotdisc charts are compiled by over 150 DJs, who choose what songs they think are hot.

“The track seemed to get a lot of support and a good response and the video for it was getting played on ‘Keep It Country’ on Sky.

“I’ve had feedback from people in France, Germany and Holland since I started making music, which is a great feeling because your music is connecting with people.”

Next up for Fiona is another single release, ‘Memories In Your Heart’ about her late father Jim.
