St Cadoc’s fundraising dinner raises tasty sum

- Jonathan Geddes

The recent fundraising night at St Cadoc’s Church in Halfway, Cambuslang, was“a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all,” according to parish priest Father Jose Cirilo Rodrigues.

Father Rodrigues hosted 45 parishioners and well-wishers of St Cadoc’s in the adjoining parish house, raising £1355 through ticket sales and donations from individual generous donors towards much-needed funds for repair work.

In total, including the £1000 previously donated, £2355 has been raised to help reduce the cost of essential repairs in the presbytery.

Father Rodrigues said: “What a marvellous result. I would like to thank everyone who came along and to those who supported it by sponsoring raffle prizes and even donating money and other items towards this worthwhile venture.

“Thank you also to the members of the Parish Pastoral Council and others for supporting my idea and initiative to organise the curry night and for all the assistance they gave me in promoting the event.

“Finally, a word of appreciation and gratitude to all who worked so hard before hand in arranging and setting up the place and to those who helped on the night with setting up and tidying away. Thank you everyone once again. I was so pleased with the overall success of the evening.”

The necessary work - including the refurbishment of the shower room, re-tiling of the walls, and repairs to the porch ceiling in the presbytery - started on Monday of this week.

The extent of the work, according to Father Rodrigues, has been assessed as stripping out existing floor tiles, shower base, shower screen, ceiling in porch; repair and replace all of the above including decorative works; repair leaks, plumbing work required and labour and materials.

The total cost of the work is estimated at £3300. However, part of the repair of the ceiling in the porch will be reclaimed through the house insurance. Fears a few years ago of St Cadoc’s closing have been allayed of late thanks to the hard work of Father Rodrigues and his parishioners rallying around him.

Fundraising, coupled with help from Motherwell Diocese, has already aided in repairing and replacing heating in the church and presbytery, and to mend the roof. On the first Sunday of each month a second collection is taken up at all Masses for the Church Building and Maintenance Fund.

The Catholic parish was founded in 1949 and the current church building was constructed in 1955. There are 1200 parishioners at St Cadoc’s.

What a marvellous result, I would like to thank everyone who came along and took part
