Cambuslang Rangers were commended for their attitude after recording one of the club’s highest ever scorelines in the 15-0 thrashing of Newmains .

Dale Simeon bagged four of the goals in the Central League Cup first round tie, while striker Jordan Love and John Gemmell each claimed a hat-trick on another miserable day for the Central District Second Division outfit.

United, who have failed to win a match all season and have conceded 133 goals in 23 games, are in a period of transition by merging with an amateur team to prepare for next season.

And Wee Gers assistant coach Billy Campbell was aware of the recent changes at the club but praised his players for their professionalism ahead of tonight’s league encounter with leaders Petershill.

He said: “We hoped we could come away with a win but we were mindful they were going through transition and reminded the players to be respectful.

“You can still take positives from a game like that. We had some great finishes and gave some game time to those who haven’t featured regularly.

“Josh Graham, who was on loan at Benburb, we brought him back in and it was good to get him involved as well as Kyle Rafferty. Ross Mckinnon was in again to bolster the squad.

“We got the chance to make some changes and it was another game for the player suspensions to go through which was another positive.

“A couple of the players got hat-tricks and we used it to build on our fitness and match sharpness going into Wednesday.

“Newmains changed their goalkeeper during the game and had a young side but we’re happy with the result.

“We knew Newmains are going through a transition at the moment and Paul [Davies] and Craig [Gupwell] are doing all they can to get the team together and try get some results. Hopefully they can pull it together quite quickly and we wish them all the best with that.”

Jordan Halsman got Cambuslang off the mark and opened the floodgates after 12 minutes as he nodded in a rebound.

Two minutes later Chris Duff stroked home number two before Jamie Hay bent his effort round a crowd of players from just outside the box and past the keeper.

Gemmell claimed a first half hattrick while Love also got himself on the scoresheet as Lang walked back to the changing rooms seven goals to the good.

Influential midfielder Simeon showed great skill and prowess to net four after the break as Duff scored his second and Love completed his hattrick.

The returning Benburb loanee Graham got in on the act with a sublime finish from long range to put a cap on a stunning Camby performance.

Junior giants Pollok await the Wee Gers in round two but Lang No.2 Campbell insists all eyes will be on tonight’s mammoth league clash.

“We’ve got three games in hand and there’s a nine point gap so we need to do the best we can to close it at the top.

“It was a close game and it was very tough at Petershill.

“We were happy with the performance that day and we will look to play our natural game.

“We have good home form but Petershill will come to set up and defend well against us so we’ll need to be up for it on the day.”

Cambuslang are also scheduled to return to Largs in the league this weekend after their cup victory at Barrfields Park a fortnight ago.

Campbell added: “In the league you go into every game with the ambition to win but six points [from the next two games]would be big for us because this club’s aim is promotion.”
