Rutherglen Reformer

Something is sounding good

London radio stations have big plans to shake up Rutherglen’s airwaves.

Delite Radio was added to the DAB+ multiplex platform in Glasgow on April 11, as was London Greek Radio (LGR), extending radio coverage for both channels to Glaswegians and Rutherglen residents.

A spokesman for the stations said: “Rutherglen is right next door to one of the DAB transmitters so [residents] should be able to pick us up loud and clear!”

Delite is a 24-hour station, with live broadcasting between 7am until 1am. It aims to bring the “feel-good” back into radio with a selection of soul, funk and the best of Motown, along with talk and the “music you want to hear”.

The station’s presenters already include breakfast man Mick Brown, Chris Forbes, Michaela Power, James Anthony, Louie Martin, Jon Jules and Tee Harris.

Mark Kirby, programme controller at the station said: “We know we’re not Heart or Clyde. We don’t have any sort of competition.”

Delite’s head of music Richard Felstead added: “We are broadening our scope to reach out to people with ‘music they want to hear’. With digital radio, we can go further and we will be looking at doing things differently at Delite.

“We’ll be talking about everyone in Glasgow, including small businesses and local people.”

Tony Jay, founder and managing director of Delite, said: “We’re really big on serving Scotland after successful launches in Portsmouth, Manchester and London.

“We will now include more features for the communities we serve.”

Scotland has an estimated Greek and Cypriot population of more than 50,000 and LGR hopes to find more listeners locally with a fusion of talk and Greek music.

The station is believed to be the first ethnic London radio station to cross the border into Scotland.

Antonaki Jay, LGR’s station manager, said: “We’re really big on serving Scotland and will now include more features for the communities we serve outside of London to include local people, local issues and local news.”

LGR already boosts top presenters after more than 35 years on the air. It will be led by veteran host Vasilis Panayi and will feature DJs including Andreas Michaelides, Kat Neocleous , DJ Sooty, Soulla Violaris and Tony Neophytou.
