Stage is set for Cambuslang man

- Jonathan Geddes

A Cambuslang Parish Church man is to swap the pews for the stage – as he takes part in a charity show to help young people travel to Africa.

Glasgow Presbytery has organised a talent show called Presbytery’s Got Talent that will let parishioners display a variety of skills, from acting to singing and dancing.

Appearing on the night will be Cambus man Graham MacGregor, and a group of children from Cairns Primary are set to appear too.

The evening will aid a worthy cause, going towards a group of youngsters from the Presbytery who are hoping to travel to South Africa this summer.

The young folk will be involved in building homes in a township called Botleng, but each person has to raise £2000 to fund their trip.

Graham has often performed various sketches at church events in the past, including getting into drag for a comedy sketch as an ushertette,

He said: “Hilary McDougall at the Presbytery asked me to do something for this show and my immediate impulse was to offer the usherette sketch which I have performed many times over the years, most recently at the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall, as part of their Music Hall Memories Show last year.

“Then I thought maybe a rendition of “the wee cock sparra” somewhere else in the show. I’m still working this out, and this might be accompanied by some humorous West of Scotland anecdotes.”

Graham enjoys the excitement of performing onstage.

He added: “I guess I enjoy the buzz of performing on stage - if an audience warms to you, then you can feel the warmth back to you. Every performance is different – it’s never the same twice!”

However the most important aspect of the night will be raising funds to help with the African trip.

Graham believes that such trips can make a difference.

He said: “I think it is important to support as many worthy causes as we can. The African continent suffers from many problems – poverty, lack of water, starvation, disease. For a group of young people to be involved in a project where they are building homes in Botleng, this must offer a degree of hope for many needy South African citizens.

“I applaud Glasgow Presbytery’s efforts to offer help and support.”

The event will take place in Langside Church on Friday April 27 at 7pm and ticket prices are £6 for an adult and £3 for a child.

Tea and coffee is included in the ticket price.

Tickets are available from the Glasgow Presbytery Office.

I guess I enjoy the buzz of performing onstage... you can feel the warmth back to you”
