Queen’s make Rovers sweat for points

- Ian Cairns at Stark’s Park

Raith Rovers ................. 2 Queen’s Park ................ 0

Queen’s Park could take plenty of positives into their final two matches despite defeat to title chasing Raith Rovers.

As expected Adam Cummins returned to the heart of the defence who had to be wary as early as the first minute when Michael White had to turn an effort from Liam Buchanan round the post for a corner.

Queen’s responded well but Cummins couldn’t direct his header on target from a corner. That effort was the best Queen’s produced for some time as the home side began to find gaps.

And with 10 minutes on the clock, they capitalised. Jason Thomson swung over a cross to the far post where Bobby Barr met it sweetly to volley past White.

With less than 10 minutes of the half remaining Lewis Magee looked to be fouled in the middle of the park, but the referee penalised him for grabbing the ball with his hand after he was felled. As the ball came into the box, David Galt’s clearance was deflected into the path of Dario Zanatta and he finished in style to double Raith’s lead.

But The Spiders started the second half brightly as Galt and Sean Burns exchanged passes to give Anton Brady a glimpse of goal. But the midfielder’s dipping volley was tipped over by keeper Graeme Smith.

Aidan Keena went close with a header from a Galt free kick, but while Queen’s were enjoying the lions’share of possession, Raith still looked lethal on the break and Ross Millen’s headed clearance hit his own cross bar on the hour.

Raith almost grabbed a third goal when Thomson crossed low for Lewis Vaughan who couldn’t direct his effort on target.

Queen’s came close again after 74 minutes but Keena’s goalbound shot was blocked.

They tried again as Gibson heaved a long shy into the Raith box and the flick on was diverted inches wide by Cummins.

The final minutes saw the home side come closest to scoring as White denied Zanatta.
