The weather stayed dry as Rutherglen president Jack Ferguson watched wife Christine throw the first bowl down the lush lawn.

Burnside
Saturday saw the recent poor weather turn spring-like for opening day at Burnside.
This in turn brought friends, family and members out in fantastic numbers to wish president Walter Matthews well for the new season.
Local councillors Robert Brown and Carol Nugent joined the swelling crowds to see the club officially opened.
And Walter delivered a rousing speech and introduced his committee to the crowds.
He also sent out a heartfelt thanks to all who had worked hard to prepare the club for opening.
The first bowl of the season was delivered by the president’s wife, Vera Matthews.
This was followed by the first game of the season which was keenly fought by all the teams.
Walter showed intent for the season ahead when his team of Douglas Johnston, Pat Caughey and Chris Allan not only won their tie, but did it so convincingly that they also won the prizes for the day.
Once the game was completed, everyone retired to the club house and the festivities carried on late into the night.
The draw has now been completed for this season’s competitions and everyone is asked to arrange ties quickly to ensure that everything runs smoothly and to time.
Notices are also on the boards looking for people willing to represent the club in the various matches and competitions outside the club.
