Sadness over possible bakery closure

One story completely dominated the Reformer’s social media last week – the possible closure of Coull’s bakery.

The shops have been a part of Rutherglen and Cambuslang for over 75 years, but owner Ross Coull is calling time on the family business to move back to his original career.

They could close at the end of June unless a buyer is found, and the news sparked a huge amount of sadness and memories from our readers.

Andrew Warnock – “The last real bakers in Rutherglen gone!! Sad day for Rutherglen”.

Michael Beirne -“Costa, cafe nero, gr eggs, subway, pizza hut. All these big franchises dont know what serving a community is all about. For 75years as well. This bakery should be praised and helped to stay open. Not disregarded so it closes with nothing only to let these big franchises in and take over. Scandalous.”

Sally Chambers – “Hope they find a buyer and give them the tattie scone recipe”.

Janice Dunn -“Hopefully someone will keep it going, it would be awful to lose another Rutherglen institution.”

Dorothy McIntosh -“Remember it well. Loved all the scones, especially the treacle ones. And the clootie dumpling. Also knew the family.”

Margaret Berry Adams -“Oh noooooooooooo they can’t !!!! ”

Many readers were quick to remember some of their favourite food that they bought from the bakery, while also expressing hope that a buyer might step in to save the day.

Margaret Gordon – “No they can’t shut, best dumpling ever’”

Ashley Little – “That’s sad news. I remember going there for the breakfast rolls every Saturday morning when I worked in RS McColls across the road. Hopefully a buyer is found.”

Helen Knowles – “Always bought their crumpets when we were in Rutherglen. Nothing to beat them.”

Melissa McCartney – “Well this is heart breaking! Loved the rolls with ham, salad.”

John Hill – “End of an era. Very famous in Rutherglen with a great reputation.”

Pauline Dempsey –“Sorry to hear this news. Hoping a buyer can be found. Great reputation and family. Thanks for trying Ross.”

Gail Dick – “This is very sad news indeed. Going to be sadly missed and Farme Cross will not be the same .”
