Book project success

A Rutherglen secondary school is in line to pass an awards test.

Trinity High is up for the Raising Attainment in Literacy gong at the Scottish Education Awards in June.

Trinity High was applauded for its efforts in raising attainment in literacy through its Drop Everything and Read initiative, where all pupils and teachers were given the same novel on the same day.

Head teacher of Trinity High School Peter Bollen said: “Trinity High School is delighted to reach the final of the Scottish Education Awards 2018.

“It is a genuine reflection of the hard work by many staff to promote literacy and to develop a team approach to raising literacy through our reading projects.

“Many people have contacted us regarding the “Whole School Novel” and to check on the difference it is making in terms of reading among pupils, families and staff.

“We are also delighted to be carrying the torch for South Lanarkshire Council at this national event.”

One nomination form stated: “The school novel is, by definition, an inclusive project. The shared experience of reading and discussing a novel, and engaging in rich learning opportunities to enhance motivation helped all students to feel part of the school community.”

Run by Media Scotland Events, and sponsored by the Daily Record and Education Scotland, the Scottish Education Awards celebrate education establishments throughout Scotland.

David Dick, editor in chief of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail, said: “Our schools and education system is full of unsung heroes helping shape Scotland’s future every day.

“We are delighted to honour such a key part of Scottish society.”
