Castlemilk church is Havana some fun

- Jonathan Geddes

Parishoners at a Castlemilk church enjoyed a taste of Havana recently, when they made their latest trip to Cuba.

The group headed abroad last month as the next stage in their ongoing three year partnership with Luyanó Presbyterian Church.

The project sees Castlemilk parishioners head to Cuba and vice versa.

Highlights of their trip this time included a visit to Seminary of Evangelical Theology and an exchange of gifts with members of the parish in Cuba.

These included a wooden cross made by Castlemilk’s Carpenters Workshop, a Prayer Shawl from the church’s knitting group, the silks from our evaluation in September and a harvest donation for the hurricane.

In return they were presented with two beautiful handmade hangings, one of which was a heart made from the Scottish and Cuban national flags to celebrate their friendship, with the second one a cross combining the two crosses as one.

There was also time for a tour around Havana, an afternoon ferry trip across Havana Bay and a visit to John Lennon Park, among other fun.

Rev Sarah Brown was not on the trip, but has previously spoken of the important benefits of the partnership

She said: “It is bringing people who usually wouldn’t mix so much or ever and hopefully change will impact each community from the learning experience.

“The project is wider than just church folks and exchange visits will include people from the wider community.

“As part of the exchange we stay in each others’ homes to gain a deeper insight into the culture.”
