Cathkin make Scottish Cup final

-

Cathkin HS ......... 3 Abderdeen GS .... 0 A stunning second half showing saw Cathkin High School advance to the senior boys’Scottish Schools Cup final for the first time.

The Cambuslang outfit and Aberdeen Grammar both looked nervy in the opening stages after a long bus journey to Methil, Fife.

But 10 minutes after the interval a cross into the six yard box was powerfully headed into the net by Cathkin defender Kyle Miller. And after weathering a period of sustained pressure from the Aberdeen front line, lovely link up play from Ben Richford and David Thompson led to Cathkin’s second of the game.

The duo paired up down the left wing before Thompson found Jay Nelson on the edge of the penalty area who stroked the ball past the keeper on 75 minutes.

As Aberdeen attacked, the South Lanarkshire side were able to catch them on the break, and a quick counter attack saw Euan MacLeod receive a pass in space and calmly score his side’s third.

Coaches Alan Lindsay and Blair Haldane were delighted for the boys. Mr Lindsay said:“The win was thoroughly deserved. Around 165 schools started out in the competition in August and we’ve made it to the last two which is a great achievement.

“It’s being going for around 113 years and this is the first time we will have contested the final.” The final will take place against St Ninian’s (Giffnock) on May 4, with a 7pm kick off at Hampden Park.

The coach added:“We expect a close fight but I don’t see why we can’t go one step further and win it.”
