Runners hit the road to highlight initiative

Mental health focus

- Marc McLean

Jogscotland Cambuslang is encouraging people to open up about their mental health.

Around 20 members are taking part in a national initiative this week which will support the work of SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health).

Cambuslang’s runners have signed up to Jogscotland’s new project Sammy’s Road Trip.

The road trip will see toy Scotty dogs Agnes, Sammy and Lee visiting groups across Scotland between May and October.

The dogs represent physical and mental wellbeing, a symbol of the partnership between Jogscotland and SAMH.

Sammy was handed over to the Cambuslang group on Monday and group sessions focusing on mental health began last night.

Laura Scott, one of four leaders at the group, said: “For our Tuesday night session we arranged a positive quotes lucky dip, where we all pulled positive comments out of a bag.

“We’ll also be taking part in a mental health quiz.

“Thursday night is a walk’n’talk session where we’re taking a stroll along the Clyde Path and we can all have a blether and open up about what’s going on in our lives.

“I believe our group improves not only your physical health but your mental health and wellbeing.

“A lot of people who have joined describe our group as a stress buster. They get so much out of it.

“I’ve been a member for two years and a group leader since December.

“There’s a real social aspect to Jogscotland that people enjoy and it can push you towards great achievements, such as completing 10k runs and marathons.”

Jogscotland will post photos of their session with the mascot dogs on their Facebook page.
