Factory bosses told: “You owe us a debt”

MSP calls for legacy

- Marc McLean

The boss of the 2 Sisters factory in Cambuslang is being urged to leave a legacy to the area when the plant closes its doors in August.

Rutherglen and Cambuslang MSP Clare Haughey has written to Ranjit Singh, president of the 2 Sisters Food Group, asking him to seriously consider leaving a legacy behind.

The politician believes such a gesture would be well earned as the community and hundreds of workers loyally served his company for more than half a century.

Ms Haughey has requested a meeting with senior 2 Sisters’ management to discuss some form of legacy from the factory.

She said: “For many years, this food manufacturing facility has been a major source of employment within Cambuslang and surrounding areas, and this closure could devastate our local economy.

“This closure has left the workers, the community, and myself deeply saddened and disappointed, and understandably we are all worried about the effect this will have locally.

“I am aware that other companies leaving an area under similar circumstances have done this.

“This is a community which has loyally served the 2 Sisters food Group and their predecessors, with hardworking, highly-trained and committed staff, for over 55 years. The group owes a debt to the Cambuslang community and this would be one way of starting to repay that.

“I have requested further dialogue with 2 Sisters management to discuss sensible legacy proposals which could ultimately be left to the people.”
