Time to play a part in our community
In last week’s Reformer I paid tribute to the personal support I had received from former councillor Clare McColl.
Since I heard the sad news of her passing I have been giving much thought to the contribution she made to our community in Cambuslang and the encouragement she gave others to do the same, roll up their sleeves and get involved.
The phrase “the personal is political” came out of the student and feminist movements of the 1960s and underlines the link between our personal experiences and how they link into where we live.
Even if joining a political party doesn’t appeal to you there are numerous other ways in which you can shape our community and help it grow.
In our ward we have very active and supportive parent councils and groups, residents’ associations, churches, charities, uniformed organisations and charities, amongst others.
Halfway community council, for example, have various workstreams locals can get involved in and I support a number of them.
From gardening, parks and recreation to local history, there’s something for everyone.
With elections to the community councils taking place this year, there’s no better time to join in.
Our SNP administration was elected on a manifesto which promised to put people and communities at the heart of everything we do.
We are taking forward our ambitious manifesto commitments around community engagement and planning.
We are quite literally opening our doors to our young people, with school visits to the County Buildings restarting and the development of our youth cabinet over the summer.
This new initiative is part of how the council is marking the Year of Young People.
Our spokesperson for youth has asked us to help raise the profile of the huge amount of talent, potential and enthusiasm of young people in our area.
If you know of or are involved with a group who may wish to plan a Year of Young People event and would like more information please get in touch.
