Cambuslang

The annual Alex MacFarlane charity day took place in the sunshine on Sunday.

The club kickstarted the annual fundraising events in 1992 after a tragic road accident involving one of its young members, Alex MacFarlane.

Alex died on Boxing Day 1991, aged 28, and is sadly missed by those at Cambuslang BC. This was the event’s 27th year and to date it has raised more than £59,300.

The club’s charity day is one of sadness but also joy as everybody participating knows what it means to Alex’s family, the club and all the charities benefitting.

Past president Will McArthur said: “Local businesses and friends donate prizes for the raffle and we are overwhelmed by the generosity shown year after year. Our thanks go to everyone whose donations make this charity day so successful.

“The support we receive from bowling clubs within and outwith the area cannot go unmentioned. Every year we have bowlers and their friends supporting this event and making the day the great success that it is.”

The MacFarlane family kindly donated a quaich which is played for each year and presented to the winning rink.

This year the final was dramatically won 4-3 with the last bowl of the game by a mixed rink consisting of: John Murray, Jamie McInall, Philip McCombes and skip John McInall.

The runners-up were a mixed rink of: Ronnie Plunkett, John MacFarlane Snr, Frank Wilson and skip David Armstrong, who were also last year’s runners-up.

Club members thanked director Alan Johnston for running the day and Glenda Montgomery for all her hard work behind the scenes.

This resulted in £1,971.83 being split between local charities Bridgeton Community Learning Campus and The Scope Club, both of which support learning and respite care in the community.

Another special moment was the unfurling of the new flag by Mrs Thomson in memory of her son, past member Colin Thomson.

The greens have been quieter at Overton over the last couple of weeks, with members venturing out to other clubs for ties and friendlies.

In the Scottish Ladies’ Pairs competition, Christine Allison and May Stark defeated Templeton to reach the third round, which gets played on June 2 at Giffnock.

May and Christine notched up another success on Saturday when, along with Anna McLean, they went to Cambulang for a friendly triples game.
