MSP backs carers

-

Carers have won the backing of Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey.

The politician pledged her support for Carers Week, which runs until June 17, and local carers across the area.

Ms Haughey has signed up to the Carers Week pledge to take carerfriendly action, highlighting the work of the 6.5 million unpaid carers across the UK and offering them any support they need.

The Scottish Government has taken action to support unpaid carers by spending more than £135 million on a range of programmes and initiatives.

The government also passed a new Carers Act, which came into force this year, which extends the rights of carers.

Clare Haughey said:“I am always delighted to have the opportunity to support the wonderful work that carers do in our communities in Rutherglen and across society.

“Across Scotland there are an estimated 788,000 unpaid carers, with tens of thousands of them under the age of 18.”
