Vandals trash sculptures – again

-

A Rutherglen community group has been left dismayed after their nature trail sculptures were trashed for the second time in just two months.

The Ruglen Ropewalk in Overtoun Park was vandalised once again at the weekend, leaving Grow 73 organisers contemplating giving up on future work in the park.

Several of the sculptures were twisted and bent, while a pole was taken completely out of the ground.

In a Facebook post on Monday night, the group said: “Yet again we encounter the destructive forces of our local vandals.

“These lovely sculptures which were made using drawings from local schoolchildren have been bent completely out of shape and one of the laundry poles has been forcibly pulled out of the ground, concrete base and all.

“It’s a shame that the stupidity of a few individuals in our community spoils things for the rest and certainly leaves all of us at Grow 73 feeling defeated and disinclined to do any further work in Overtoun Park.

“Please, if you see anyone abusing these sculptures call the police on 101.”

The group then tagged the post #RuglenRopewalk and #disappearingfast.

The new sculptures, created by the artist Rob Mulholland, had previously only lasted two days after being opened at the end of April before vandals damaged the figures in the park.

The £12,000 project includes a host of sculptures and stories about the history of the area.

Anyone with information which could assist the police with their inquiries is asked to contact 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
