Cathkin pupils really are the wheel deal

Bike week is a hit

- Murray Spooner

Pupils at Cathkin High had a wheely good time as they joined in the school’s first ever Bike Week event.

In order to raise the profile of cycling in the school and to encourage pupils to get out on the road, a series of bike-related events were organised by the Cycling Committee.

Every lunchtime pupils were invited to come down to try out the school’s new fleet of hybrid bikes in the playground.

The initiative proved to be a success and all 19 bikes were in use throughout the week earlier this month.

Some pupils also used Bike Week as an opportunity to learn how to cycle for the first time.

Others use the experience to just improve their confidence on the saddle.

Free bike MOTs were also offered where pupils could bring their own wheels in for a tune up.

There was a further visit from Dr Bike who came to Cathkin from the Glasgow based cycling charity ‘Bike for Good’.

He offered a more professional bike service to pupils free of charge, helping encourage youngsters to keep cycling.

A school spokeswoman said: “The event was a huge success and we really hope that it will encourage more Cathkin pupils to use their bikes for transport or leisure.”

Pupils also enjoyed a ‘Bike Breakfast’ where they were rewarded for cycling to school with a free roll and sausage for their efforts.

Cathkin’s first mountain bike skills class took to the road on June 15 where seven S3 boys tried their hand at mountain biking at Cathkin Braes.

Due to popular demand, the Bike Week was extended a further two days and the school were offering ‘ladies only’ lunchtime cycling sessions to encourage more girls to try out the sport.
