Persuasive team win £3K for charity

- Marc McLean

Four fabulous Cathkin High pupils have earned £ 3000 for their chosen charity - after convincing competition judges it was the most worthy cause.

Emma Waugh, Mor ven Last, Claire White and Lauren MacKay selected Cambuslang Handicapped Fund as the organisation they most wanted to support, and created a compelling case on why it should receive £3000 from a charity pot.

The Rutherglen High School recently held its annual Youth Philanthropy Initiative ( YPI) final, which was delivered by the Religious Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS) department.

The initiative encouraged pupils to consider and reflect on social issues within the community, and then identify a charity that supports people in the area.

The whole of S4 began by researching the work and viability of charities, including the number of employees, overheads, where money is spent, ratio of wages to charitable work and the like.

From this research, groups of pupils built up a presentation and argued why their chosen charity deserved the top prize donation of £3000 from the school.

Seven groups were chosen to share presentations, videos and speeches in front of fellow pupils, representatives from selected charities, and a judging panel.
