Community spirit back at King’s Park

- Jonathan Geddes

King’s Park Church are hoping to get some community spirit going again next week.

On Monday they will be welcoming everyone in the local area to the church for their legacy to the Queen’s baton party.

The idea first started in 2014, where it tied in with the Commonwealth Games taking place in Glasgow and the Queen’s baton that was being passed from person before arriving in Glasgow.

It proved popular enough that it returned the following year, and it has been a hit ever since.

The day is aimed at bringing the whole community together, whether they attend the church or not, as well as providing some summer fun.

There will be a bouncy castle, a beat the goalie contest, face painting and the popular owls from the Owl Magic group will be on hand too.

King’s Park minister, Rev Sandra Boyd, is optimistic the day will be a big hit, and wants as many people involved as possible.

She said: “Everything is free on the day, from bouncy castles to crafts and the coconut shy to jelly and ice-cream, hot dogs, hamburgers and not forgetting our memorable magician.

“But no matter the weather, we have been extremely lucky in the past, there will be fun and games in abundance.

“Why not entertain the children during the holidays by bringing them along and enjoying some time together with your friends and neighbours from King’s Park and beyond?”

Sandra is also hoping the church can learn a few things from visitors, too.

Having previously held events like the Great Get-together, Monday’s event is the latest attempt by the church to engage with the wider community.

She added: “There will also be a community questionnaire asking local people what King’s Park Church can do for and in the local area for children, teenagers and adults.

“I’d hope that some of the people who come along could please take two minutes to complete this as King’s Park Church is here to serve the local
