Cold callers’ work left our drive ‘a mess’

OAP:‘Ishouldhaveseenwarningsigns’

- Jonathan Geddes

A Cambuslang pensioner has warned other residents to think twice before allowing cold callers to carry out work – after being left unhappy claiming her driveway was left in a shoddy state because of their work.

Mary Scott, 82, was in her garden when approached on a Saturday afternoon by a man from the Weathershield company.

He offered to work on her gutters, and then asked if she wanted work done on her driveway, which needed new paving slabs.

However Mary says the work done, which cost £350 was “a complete mess”, with the new paving slabs a completely different colour.

And she has been blanked by the workers when she tried to contact them afterwards.

She said: “I know it was foolish and I’ve never agreed to that work being done before by someone coming to the door.

“But I can’t do the gutters anymore at my age, so I agreed that they could do that.

“Then the lad mentioned that his father could do the paving slabs too.

“I said I wouldn’t have the money for that, but they mentioned that the banks would be open and they could come back later on.

“I should have seen the warning signs then. The work they ended up doing was about what I could have done myself - the driveway looks awful now.”

Weathershield advertise themselves as a company that can handle all sorts of repairs including: tiling, slating, felting, roof repairs, roughcasting, gutter cleaning and renewal, UPVC supplied and fitted, and the power washing of roofs, driveways, paths and patios.

Mary insists that the gutters and paving project at her property was handled unprofessionally.

The pensioner claims she never received a receipt and, after complaining about the standard of the paving works, she was ignored.

Her phone calls have gone unanswered and a letter written to the company’s base in Cleland Industrial Estate, Motherwell, weeks ago has not been responded to.

Mary said: “I’ve tried them repeatedly and it just rings out. I would like them to come out and sort the mess they’ve done.

“One of my neighbours was over and just asked what had happened the new slabs look terrible.

“My husband says we should just cut our losses but I don’t want to let it go. I want to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

The Rutherglen Reformer tried contacting Weathershield on the Glasgow, Lanarkshire and mobile numbers listed on the leaflet handed to Mrs Scott. However, none of our calls were returned.
