Older generations lose out yet again
Dear Editor I am writing to register my disappointment at the decision by South Lanarkshire Council to start charging Active Age card holders for swimming lessons.
While I accept that for the first year the charges are half of the full price, I also know that several Active Age card holders, particularly those solely dependant on the basic state pension, cannot afford this increase and will be forced to stop taking lessons.
As the benefits of exercise to physical and mental health are well documented in many academic studies, initiating these charges seems an extremely short-sighted policy as it increases the likelihood of those who stop taking the lessons making earlier use of the NHS and also being socially isolated.
I understand that there is no pressing financial need for this action as South Lanarkshire Council have ample funds in reserve.
It seems that this action, taken together with the decision to close two care homes in South Lanarkshire, appears to be a policy of targeting older members of the
community.
Gus Morrison, Hairmyres What is it with people who voted Leave in the EU Referendum always moaning?
Whether they be voters at the ballot box, Leave-supporting politicians or Leave-supporting TV and radio pundits, all I here is them complaining about Remain voters even though they won the aforementioned referendum. One wonders why that could be? Perhaps it is to do with the utter shambles their precious Brexit has become or maybe those politicians and talking heads who promised so much before the vote on June 2016 are getting nervous about making good on those commitments.
Leave won but I do not accept that people voted for this – emergency plans to stockpile food and drugs, chaos at the ports and airports and the prospect of a hard border on the island of Ireland.
With all of that going on, now is the perfect time to continue debating whether we should Brexit or are just better off staying in the EU. Name withheld on request, Via email
