MP seeks survey

- Jonathan Geddes

Rutherglen’s MP has called fo r improvements to the high street and appealed for feedback from small businesses regarding the challenges they face.

A number of local companies have struggled in recent months, with the likes of the Black Poppy and Big Coffee Cup cafes shutting.

Now Ged Killen MP has set up a survey, asking local companies to discuss any issues they have faced.

The Labour man is hopeful this can help companies in the future.

He said: “Before I was an MP, I ran a small business so I understand how frustrating it can be when it feels as though factors outwith your control are having an impact on your business.

“Businesses in Rutherglen have had issues with landlords recently forcing them to relocate or close.

“In Cambuslang, I’ve had complaints from businesses and residents who are concerned about parking, bins on the Main Street and a lack of banking facilities.

“Our local high streets need to be attractive, welcoming spaces with services and facilities to attract people to the area.

“That’s primarily why I have launched my campaign against bank closures and to protect free access to ATMs, and I know that local community councils, such as Cambuslang, have been leading the way on key issues affecting town centres.”

Mr Killen added: “It is important to have a full understanding of what issues businesses are facing so that we can work together to overcome them to the benefit of the whole community.”
