Silver days for group
Praise from parliament
A group that has been improving a neighbourhood in Cambuslang for 25 years was praised in the S co t t i s h Parliament last week.
Overton Tenants and Residents Association celebrated their 25th anniversary with an open day at Halfway Community Hub last Monday afternoon.
Members were also given certificates in recognition of their long service with the association, including Margaret Lipton, Councillor Walter Brogan, Alison Parkes, Jessie Fleming, Emma Hailes, Gilly Feron, Barbara Parkes and Gilbert Parkes.
The event was open to the community and afternoon celebrations included face painting and activities for youngsters, along with tea, sandwiches and cakes for adults.
Meanwhile, regional list MSP James Kelly helped the group gain much-deserved national recognition by lodging an official motion at Holyrood.
Mr Kelly paid tribute to the work of the committee members from over the years, including former councillor Davy Kiers who founded the group in 1993.
MSP Kelly said: “I am delighted that Overton Tenants and Residents Association have marked their 25th anniversary last week. The association was set up following calls from former Labour Councillor Davy Kiers in 1993 to push for improvements in the area.
“Over the years, these volunteers have dedicated their time and efforts to bringing the local community together and have secured beneficial changes for the area over recent years.
“It was great to join members of the association last Monday to celebrate this occasion and hear from them about the work they are planning on carrying out over the coming months.
“I look forward to keeping up to date with the fantastic team of volunteers and continue to offer my support wherever I can.”
Gilly Feron, vice chairman of Ove rton Tenant s Association, thanked Joseph Nelson Funeral Directors in Halfway for sponsoring the open day.
