Thought for the Week

-

During the holidays I read a novel. It was a work of science fiction.

Flu- like plague had swept through the entire modern world killing 99% of the population.

Society and infrastructure collapsed for the few people that were left.

There was no power, no electricity, no phones, no medicines, no computers... nothing.

The few survivors, forced back to a primitive world, learned to discover what truly and basically mattered in their relationships and beliefs.

They adapted to the loss of life as we know it.

It reminded me of how thin the veneer is that we enjoy and take for granted.

During the holidays I reflected on the words of Jesus.

“What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? What could you ever trade your soul for?” (Mark 8:36 – Message translation).

The Bible and history are cluttered with the stories of people who had everything, or at least more than we do, or maybe as much as we do; yet through a process of loss were forced to consider what really, truly and basically mattered

Whatever you are dealing with at the moment, whether it is joy or loss, disappointing exam results or unexpected success, the frailty of health or successful convalescence, struggles or triumph at work, images of weakness or strength, or simply the grind of the everyday; may these not blind you to the real you.

Use this time, cherish it, and in the midst find the grace and presence of God and in finding the grace of God discover you.
