It’s not mission impossible for Carla!

- Jonathan Geddes

A Carluke songstress has announced the details of her latest album - after gaining inspiration while on a trip to Canada.

Carla Easton will released her second solo record Impossible Stuff in October, following on from her first record, 2016’s Homemade Lemonade.

It sees the singer, who also plays with girl gang popsters Teen Canteen, take inspiration from the sweeping, dramatic orchestral arrangements of Phil Spector, which fuelled the likes of the Ronettes and the Crystals.

Last year Carla took part in the first ever singer-songwriter residency at the renowned Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta, where she worked with a host of other acts.

Inspired by the experience, she headed back to Lanarkshire and wrote a clutch of new tunes on her piano at home.

She then returned to Canada for a month to record the songs, which display the singer’s lifelong love of classic pop tunes.

Earlier this year Carla released the first single from the record, Lights In The Dark, and played a special Glasgow gig as part of the Celtic Connections festival.

Produced by Howard Bilerman, who has previously worked with the likes of Arcade Fire, Leonard Cohen and British Sea Power, Impossible Stuff sees Carla maturing musically with an ambitious and exceptional Spectoresque offering of symphonic sounds.

The album was recorded in stereo in Montreal at the world renowned HOTEL2TANGO studios, with an array of talent, including Fats Kaplin ( Jack White/ Beck), Mishka Stein (Patrick Watson Band) and Rishi Dhir (Elephant Stone/ Mien).

Carla has also kept herself busy recently by working on a documentary about the history of female music makers in Scotland, including playing a special Edinburgh festival gig on Friday, August 24.

The film will look at the reasons why girls are less likely to form bands while young, while the gig will see Sacred Paws, Bossy Love and The Van T’s perform, as well as a collaboration between some of Scotland’s most talented female musicians, including Carla.

Impossible Stuff is released on Friday October 5 via Scottish indie label Olive Grove Records on limited edition duck egg-blue 12’’ Vinyl and all digital outlets.

The album’s release will be followed with a UK tour.
